Freshwater Supply for Kojani Town, Zanzibar

The design

Kojani Town sits on Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago, where groundwater is saline and safe water is scarce. The project pairs eight to ten solar and wind powered desalination units, each producing around 200 litres per hour, with reverse-osmosis purification and the rehabilitation of two derelict wells.

Wellhead protection zones and lined pits replace open soak-pits to protect the aquifer. Units are community-operated, and the eighteen-month programme creates local employment for young people.
