News19 March 2026· United Nations Office at Geneva

At the 61st UN Human Rights Council, GIWEH hosted a high-level side event on digital innovation and South–South cooperation for the Right to Development.

During the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, GIWEH convened a high-level side event examining how digital innovation and South–South cooperation can advance the Right to Development. The event brought together diplomats, UN experts and civil-society representatives.

Discussion focused on how digital tools, from open environmental data to remote monitoring, can widen access to water and environmental services, and on the safeguards needed so that innovation reaches the communities that need it most. Speakers emphasised cooperation between Global South institutions as a practical engine for delivery.

The side event continues GIWEH's sustained engagement at the Human Rights Council, where it holds UN-ECOSOC consultative status and contributes oral and written statements on water, environment and the right to development.
