COP29, Water, Climate and Conflict
At COP29 in Baku, GIWEH shaped a programme connecting water security with climate adaptation and conflict prevention, three agendas usually negotiated apart.
What we did
GIWEH co-organised a series of sessions at COP29 bringing together government ministers, UN agencies, development banks and field practitioners. The sessions framed water as the medium through which most communities experience climate change, through drought, flood and the stress they place on fragile states, and advanced concrete commitments on water diplomacy and adaptation finance.
The institute used its convening power to link the South Caucasus to the wider Global South, continuing the South–South cooperation that has become a hallmark of GIWEH's diplomacy.
Outcomes
The dialogue fed directly into GIWEH's growing portfolio on transboundary cooperation and helped position water security as a recognised pillar of the climate negotiations.
