The idea

More than half the world's population depends on water that crosses a border. GIWEH's Mediation Facility offers riparian states a trusted, science-based service: joint monitoring, shared data platforms, scenario modelling and facilitated dialogue, delivered by experts with no stake in the outcome.

Drawing on the institute's experience in the Kura basin and its standing in Geneva's diplomatic community, the Facility is designed to be invited in early, before disputes harden, and to leave behind permanent institutions for cooperation.

How it works

Each engagement begins with a shared technical baseline, moves through confidence-building measures, and aims to produce a durable agreement and a joint body to steward it.
